Center of the Future Academy, Incorporation, has been a school-based mentoring organization for over 30 years.  Research has proven that mentoring is a fruitful method of enhancing success for youth. Mentors are caring people that lend guidance and support to enable a young person to dream, set goals, and enhance his or her passions and visions. Not only does mentoring become an asset to the mentee’s development, but also the development of the mentor by enhancing their sense of purpose while gaining more insight of self as they “reach back to move forward”.

Our Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Virtual Team Mentoring Initiative is focused on creating a bond between current HBCU students and underserved K-12 students in hopes of ensuring their success. In the past, student mentors have provided mentoring from HBCU’s such as Paul Quinn College, Hampton University, Saint Paul’s College, Norfolk State University and Johnson C. Smith.

In the past, our mentoring programs have been face-to-face school based and community-mentoring programs.  However, since the pandemic, we are working to engage our mentees in a variety of ways to ensure their success. We are now expanding this initiative into Virtual Mentoring because the Pandemic has caused many of our young people to fall behind academically as well as socially.

At the present time we are recruiting HBCU students to be K-12 Virtual Mentors. There will be opportunities for team and one-on-one mentoring. This initiative will allow the Virtual Mentors an opportunity to bring their fresh ideas to the table as our Mentoring Programs are tailored to meet the needs of the mentees as well as tap into the mentor’s areas of expertise.
